ABSTRACT

Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT) can be used to increase estrogen by using synthetic estrogen. However, ERT may increase the risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, vaginal bleeding, thrombophlebitis and
thromboembolism. Current researches are now using natural ingredients such as tempe, tofu and soy bean. Indonesia is one of the countries commonly consumed large amount of tempe and tofu – soy products rich
in phytoestrogens. The aims of this study were to analized the effect of tempe flour on serum estrogenin ovariectomized female rats. This research was conducted on white female Sprague Dawley strain rats, aged 12
months by experimental design using a completely randomized design (CRD). Seventy two (72) white female Sprague Dawley strain rats, aged 12 months were used for this study. Before the intervention 52 rats underwent
ovariectomy (OVx) and they were grouped into 4 intervention groups: tempe flour (Tp), tofu flour (Tf), estradiol (E2), and casein as a control protein (Cs). The remaining 20 rats were classed as controls and had no ovariectomy (NO).Data processing and analysis of the average difference between the treatment groups used One Way ANOVA with Polynomial Contrast Post Hoc LSD.Analysis of estrogen serum showed that tempe
flour had the highest increased in serum estrogen than the other intervention group (tempe flour, tofu flour, estradiol, and casein). The increase of serum estrogen in tempe flour group was two times higher in serum estrogen levels than tofu flour group (P<0,05). Tempe flour group had a significant increase compared to baseline 2 (P<0,05), while tofu flour group were not significant (P> 0,05).Intervention by tempe flour can increase serum estrogen. Tempe flour may have potentially to over come problems due to decreased estrogen in ovariectomized female rats.
